The 18th-century Leyritz Plantation is a historical landmark, national treasure, working banana farm, major tourist attraction and fascinating hotel. Daytrippers can have lunch and tour the grounds, but overnight guests discover the estate’s deeper character. Most guest rooms are located in buildings that once served as slave quarters or service buildings for the manor house. Others are in new cottages. Ask about staying in the former kitchen or carriage house, which sit on top of a hill and are furnished with four-poster beds and a sunny terrace with views of the ocean. The guardhouse offers absolute privacy within thick stone walls. All rooms are air-conditioned and have a TV, hair dryer and telephone. While accommodations aren’t luxurious, the surroundings are enchanting. Early in the morning or late in the afternoon, after the day-tourists have left, you will enjoy the relaxed calm in the natural gardens and around the fountainstudded pool. Sip a drink at the bar. Order a leisurely dinner in the restaurant. Stroll past the manor house that was modeled after the Leyritz family château in France. Follow the stone irrigation canal that brings mountain water down to the estate. Look out cross the countryside toward Mont Pelée and the ocean.
